ENGIE has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Distribution Engineer located in Iowa City, IA. Under general supervision, this position will apply knowledge and skill to design, specify, procure, advise on installation, operations, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of the mechanical distribution systems for steam, domestic water, hot water heating, chilled water and compressed air as well as sanitary and storm sewer systems. Conducts modeling of systems to ensure that design standards and delivery requirements can be met with existing and proposed piping. Advises design and construction projects of piping requirements.

What you'll do:
  • Reviews and approves design documentation, advises of needed changes
  • Reviews utility system construction in progress, advises of needed changes and approves of milestone completions
  • Advises Mechanical Distribution management and staff regarding the safe and efficient operation of steam, water, chilled water, compressed air distribution systems, sanitary and storm water systems
  • Assists with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of mechanical distribution systems failures
  • Builds, maintains and operates distribution piping modeling software analysis tools.
  • Determines and advises management and staff on recommended changes to operation, repair and maintenance of mechanical distribution systems
  • Assists with development of preventative maintenance programs
  • Interprets and maintains diagrams, schematics, updates system logs, drawings and documentation on utility systems
  • Assists in arranging building shutdowns of mechanical distribution utilities for emergencies and for routine maintenance
  • Determines jobsite work sequences and safety procedures required, procures materials and coordinates outages
  • Provides functional supervision including training and instructions to other staff.
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to use personal computer, calculator, and work with standard software applications, including piping system modeling tools
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions


What you bring:
  • Bachelor of Science in a technical field from an ABET institution required. Major in a disciplined Mechanical or Civil Engineering curriculum preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience with design, construction or operation of utility mechanical distribution systems
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or passing of the Fundamental Engineering (FE) exam is desirable
  • Knowledge of utility systems in a campus or district energy system environment
  • Knowledge of tools and methods necessary to troubleshoot and maintain utility piping systems
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in the steam and piping trades
  • Knowledge of welding techniques and equipment
  • Knowledge of the trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental caused conditions
  • Knowledge of building and piping codes, utility standards, and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations and guidelines of local, state, and national electrical and safety codes, equipment manufacturers and others
  • Ability to maintain records and system documentation
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills
  • Ability to analyze system problems, recommend and implement system changes
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with other department personnel, vendors and suppliers, students, staff, and the general public

  • Valid Driver's License
