We are looking for a senior metallurgist to join a world-class materials and corrosion team. Our experimental and test work is mainly in support of the nuclear industry.

There is a particular emphasis on helping our clients identify materials for use in their nuclear fleet, plus identifying, simulating (via analysis and use of rigs) and proposing solutions to material issues and failures. We have extensive laboratories which have an range of modern facilities and our team of scientists and engineers are at the forefront of applied and real world materials problems in this field in the UK and overseas.


You will be responsible for the delivering of failure and equipment qualification development projects involving both experimental and analytical components. Responsibilities include:
• Performing experimental work in a safe and controlled manner in line with best practice and safety procedures.
• Analysis and interpretation of experimental data.
• Materials characterisation using methods including Scanning Electron Microscopy and Optical Microscopy.
• Development of novel experimental or analytical techniques to help clients identify their issues.
• Presentation of results and conclusions of studies to customers.
• Where appropriate, publication of work at external conferences or in technical journals.
• Client liaison and acting as Responsible Engineer on projects.
• Working hand in hand with Engineering management, project management and controls to effectively and efficiently deliver projects, both single discipline and multi-disciplinary in nature.


In order to be able to develop as necessary in this post you must be qualified in a metallurgy related discipline. A desire to be involved in laboratory environment is essential since some activities have a component of experimental work.

Also highly desirable is experience or demonstrable aptitude as follows, although these will be enhanced through on-the-job training:
• An ability to plan and conduct research to meet required technical objectives, to interpret the results in the context of customer needs and to present the conclusions orally and in written reports.
• Knowledge of metallurgy and associated characterisation techniques, specifically with knowledge of Nickel based alloys and/or stainless steels and advanced characterisation techniques including SEM, EBSD and XRD. Some experience of Tribology and coatings helpful.
• Self-motivated, with an ability to conduct and lead research work.
• Some management experience and demonstrable ability to work independently and as part of a team.
