Role Overview

Jacobs is looking to recruit a Materials Testing Technologist who has experience of performing mechanical testing to the requirements of BS EN ISO IEC 17025. The successful candidate will join the Materials and Component Research Laboratory team with duties including:
• Providing hands on mechanical testing support to a wide variety of structural integrity testing programmes for customers who operate safety critical structures;
• Supervision and guidance for test technicians in various aspects of materials testing;
• Analysis and interpretation of test results, including reporting to customers;
• Supporting the UKAS accredited laboratory quality management system.

The successful candidate will have good practical engineering understanding and experience of working in an engineering laboratory environment to strict quality assurance requirements and following appropriate codes and standards.

Our customers come from a wide range of industries, predominantly from the nuclear and conventional power generation sectors, but also aerospace and automotive.

Key Responsibilities

Performing mechanical testing activities, including tensile, fatigue, creep, creep crack growth and other bespoke testing activities.

Overseeing progress of test technicians and ensure compliance with the requirements of the quality system.

Analysing problems, discussing and developing solutions with colleagues and the customer.

Liaising with external suppliers.

Producing technical reports, detailing the testing techniques employed, the results obtained and any data interpretation as appropriate.

Delivering work to time, cost and quality to meet customer expectations.

Checking and verifying the work of colleagues.

Assisting with the development and production of contract proposals and bids.

Role Requirements



Knowledge and practical experience of mechanical testing techniques, including tensile, creep, fatigue and fracture. Currently, this is largely focussed upon metals but other material systems may also be of interest, e.g. ceramics, polymers or composite systems.

Experience of working in mechanical testing in the nuclear power generation or equivalent safety critical industry.

A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, e.g. Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics.

The ability to utilise practical skills and knowledge and to convert theoretical concepts into practical applications, to assist in the resolution of technically complex problems.

A willingness to spend a proportion of the time working on client sites (not expected to be significant).


Experience of dealing directly with clients.

Experience of supervising and checking the work of colleagues against specified procedures.
