AECOM is seeking an Archaeological Chief to be based in Phoenix, AZ. The archaeological crew chief will support all types of cultural resource studies primarily in Arizona and surrounding states. The studies could include records reviews, intensive cultural resource field surveys, archaeological excavations, and lab studies. The archaeological crew chief will assist in the management of cultural resource studies to facilitate their successful completion. Conduct archaeological fieldwork and compile field documentation. The work could require prolonged walking or standing on various types of terrain; extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt; bending, kneeling, and standing activities, and lifting and carry objects weighing as much as 50 lbs., all in outdoor environments, under a wide range of weather conditions. Lead crews and instruct crewmembers in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, and making logistical arrangements. Manage artifact collections, contribute to laboratory analyses, and mentor new or inexperienced staff in proper field or lab methods and ensure lab protocols are followed. Write archaeological reports and prepare archaeological site forms in coordination with other team members and support staff. Travel as needed for project work and have a valid driver's license. Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure projects meet AECOM quality and safety standards. Follows AECOM corporate policies and procedures. Assume personal responsibility for furthering capabilities to ensure career growth. Responsibilities include but aren't limited to:
- Performs standard scientific work requiring application of techniques and procedures.
- Detects problems when using standardized procedures because of the condition of sample, difficulties with the equipment, etc.
- Conducts specific phases of projects for more experienced scientists.
- Proposes appropriate analytical methods and techniques. Assists in providing advice and consulting services within scope of scientific knowledge.
- Draws conclusions and makes recommendations based on analysis.
- Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
- Works under general supervision.

- BA/BS in anthropology or a related field + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
What We Offer
- MA degree in anthropology or a related field.
- 4 years or more of progressively responsible employment in cultural resource management including demonstrated 2 years of experience as a crew chief
- Regional archaeological expertise in the Southwestern United States.
- Ability to supervise archaeological fieldwork and manage logistical arrangements for fieldwork.
- Contribute to lab processing and technical analysis
- Manage budgets, supervise personnel, schedule staff and tasks related to specific projects
- Strong skills in writing and reviewing technical reports and research designs/treatment plans
- Thorough understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106.
- Contribute to preparation of proposals
- Ability to adapt quickly to changes in project needs
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agency and tribal representatives, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders
- Strong work ethic, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience with standard Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel)
- Certification as field director for Arizona Antiquities Act permits and cultural resource study permits for other agencies
- Register of Professional Archaeologists certification
- Experience working with tribal communities
- Proficiency with geographic information system and database software
