Senior Software Developer

Job Summary:

As a Senior Software Developer your main job role is to help drive autonomous systems capabilities to the next level.



  • Building software by writing new code, refactoring existing code, porting it to new platforms, optimizing code performance, revising its interfaces and writing developer documentation
  • Performing in all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle with an emphasis on design, implementation, unit testing, maintenance and code reviews
  • Writing cross-platform code for a mixed Windows and Linux-based environment
  • Preparing reports on software project specifications, activities, or status
  • Developing server-based autonomy and automation applications that communicate via message-oriented middleware (MOM) and interface to embedded systems using the Controller Area Network (CAN bus) and Modbus
  • Modeling & Simulation (M&S), Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and Automated Test and Retest (ATRT)
  • Developing adapters for message translation and subsystem abstraction layers
  • Consulting / collaborating with engineering staff to evaluate software and hardware interfaces and identify specifications and performance requirements
  • Supporting the development of software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcomes and design consequences
  • Consulting / collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in
  • Supporting cost and schedule estimates for software development tasks
  • Consulting / collaborating with project managers to obtain information on limitations or capabilities
  • Support the software team with best practices on an entrepreneurial, lean and agile project
  • Autonomy, Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) systems, and Cybersecurity
  • Supporting the integration of developmental software with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)/ government-furnished equipment (GFE) components, stimulators, M&S environments, and ATRT infrastructure within a prototyping lab

  • Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering or related field is required



Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in developing distributed, embedded or control systems
  • Demonstrated proficiency with C/C++ and Python as well as associated IDEs/toolchains and cross-platform development on Windows and Linux (ideally Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7)
  • Demonstrated experience with publish/subscribe infrastructure employing Data Distribution Service (DDS) networking middleware (ideally RTI Connext DDS) or similar
  • Demonstrated experience with common open-source utilities and supporting development (e.g. Qt, Boost, X11, Mesa, Postgresql, Xerces, Samba, Git, Doxygen, JIRA, Confluence, etc.)
  • Demonstrated use of coding and software engineering best practices (e.g. KISS, naming conventions, commenting, portability, modularity, separation of concerns, etc.)
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) software design patterns (e.g., factory method, adapter, command, strategy, memento, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies, products, and methods, as well as the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform as a team member within an Agile development environment
  • Willingness to travel in support of software integration and test

Desired Candidate Qualifications

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink development and C++ code generation
  • Experience with CAN bus and Modbus high-speed data protocols
  • Experience with the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and XML Schema Definition (XSD) for XML data binding
  • Experience developing software for programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Experience developing M&S applications employing Distributed Interactive Simulation (Client) or High-Level Architecture (HLA) standards
  • Familiarity with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and System Modeling Language (SysML)
  • Familiarity with CMMI Processes
