What's the role?
This position is for an experienced employee benefits attorney with five or more years of experience. In conjunction with the US Labor, Employment and Benefits Team, the successful candidate's responsibilities include directing and counseling clients in the design, implementation and administration of pension, 401(k), health and welfare, employer stock, and other employee benefit plans. This position will: provide legal advice on such issues as plan assets, fiduciary responsibility, reporting and claims procedure requirements under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) impacting health and welfare and retirement plans; assist with the design and drafting of plans, plan amendments and other documents pertaining to employee benefits; support due diligence and other benefit plan aspects of business transactions; negotiate service agreements with various plan vendors; and manage compliance with ERISA and other legal requirements.
This position reports to the Managing Counsel, North America Corporate, Finance & HR/Benefits, located in Houston, Texas. The Legal Corporate team within Shell Legal provides legal advice and services on corporate, finance, HR and benefits matters. The successful candidate will join a US team of two labor and employment and one employee benefits attorneys.

What we need from you
The successful candidate for this position should be a knowledgeable ERISA attorney with experience in all areas of ERISA and employee benefits. She or he will be accountable for the quality of her or his legal advice, including its timeliness and cost effectiveness. She or he will represent Shell and the Shell Retirement Funds vis-a-vis third parties, senior level executives, officers and directors, internal functions and businesses. She or he will counsel the businesses, Trustees, Plan Administrator and Plan Sponsors, providing strategic legal advice and representation to avoid or minimize risks in the area of employee benefits, keeping multiple leaders appropriately advised and aligned on specific legal issues.
Specific requirements include:
- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- J.D. from an accredited law school required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as an employee benefits attorney.
- Licensed to practice law in Texas, or able to obtain license in a reasonable timeframe.
- Strong negotiation and counseling skills.
- Experience with business transactions, including M&A and related due diligence.
- Ability to work independently without the assistance of outside counsel.
- Ability to meet deadlines and demonstrate flexibility.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- The candidate must be able and willing to see both the big picture and to handle details accurately and consistently.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including with senior level executives and overseas colleagues.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Familiarity with federal and state regulatory agencies including DOL, IRS, PBGC, and SEC.
- Excellent legal drafting skills.
