Baker Hughes has an opening within the Product Development Group (Drilling Services) for a Systems Engineer (m/f/d) - Drilling Services Automation in Celle, Germany. As a Systems Engineer (m/f/d) you are working in a multi-disciplinary project team within our product development department and will work closely together with the respective project managers.

For our growing drilling automation services, you are responsible for the requirements- and systems analysis, elaboration of use cases and test cases, as well as development of architecture and specifications for software- and mechatronic systems. For that, you will interact with a broad range of project stakeholders, from end users to development engineers.

This hands-on position involves full exposure to design, development, testing, and deployment of new components and complete drilling systems for harsh environment operations. The opportunity affords career growth and mentoring through a well-established training and development program.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Elicitation and elaboration of system and component requirements
  • Elaboration of high level system architecture (functional and logical)
  • Analysis of requirements and their impact on system architecture and design
  • Specification and management of requirements
  • Elaboration of use cases and test cases
  • Elaboration of verification and validation matrix
  • Monitor and test application performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes
  • Actively drive communication among engineering disciplines and end users: domain SMEs, software developers, functional developers, software architects and project management
  • Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks
  • Support of system integration and system test activities
  • Conduction of detailed failure mode analysis, cause & effects analysis
  • Prioritizing action items within the team to engineer out risks or reduce them to an acceptable level
  • Promotion of systems engineering and establishment of best practices


  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related subject
  • Experience in systems engineering and requirements engineering
  • Excellent communication and moderation skills
  • Interdisciplinary skills. Understanding of software development, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering
  • Solid scripting skills (e.g. shell scripts)
  • Self-contained, self-motivated and structured approach to work
  • Good written and oral English skills
  • Openness to learn and work in new areas

Desired Characteristics:

  • Prior job experience as systems engineer or systems architect (e.g. in a mechatronic environment)
  • Knowledge of oilfield drilling principles, prior experience in oil field is a bonus
  • Experience with systems modelling languages, e.g. SysML, UML
  • Experience with systems engineering and requirements management tools, e.g. Enterprise Architect, MagicDraw, Doors, Polarion
  • Practical experience in software- or function development
  • Experience with test methods, procedures and tools
  • Experience in UI/UX, system interaction
  • Experience in international working environment and strong interest in working with other cultures
  • Knowledge of Linux systems and containerized software architecture (e.g. Docker)
  • Knowledge of continuous integration / continuous delivery best practices
  • Appreciation of behavioural driven development / test driven development
  • Experience leading design and process failure mode and effect analysis
