Key Accountabilities:
  • Communicates and engages the laboratory staff in safety awareness.
  • Supports the Laboratory's Safety and Chemical Hygiene Plan and participates in lab safety audits.
  • Serves as the primary communications link for product quality in the refinery.
  • Certifies refinery products and coordinates the notifications of off-specification products and refinery intermediate streams.
  • Implements all refinery policies and procedures as appropriate for laboratory operations.
  • Administers attendance policy and positive discipline.
  • Facilitates communication to ensure there is alignment between the testing needs of the refinery and the testing capabilities of the laboratory.
  • Ensures the technicians are following established policies and procedures to meet the short-term operational needs of the laboratory and the long term strategic goals of the lab.
  • Communicates the status of lab and refinery performance and engage the technicians in discussions about new ideas that will enhance the success of BP, the Whiting Business Unit and the lab.
  • Provides coaching/mentoring/training to laboratory technicians to assist their learning and understanding of the lab and the Whiting Business unit.
  • Supports the Laboratory's ISO 9001 certification which includes completing test method audits and quality action notifications.
  • Adheres to and improves established work methods and work processes.
  • Jointly responsible (with Lab Manager) for controlling overtime expenses and meeting the lab's financial goals.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates to lab staff with regards to lab strategies, objectives, and business needs.
  • Oversees the scheduling of technicians and engineering assistants to properly allocate resources to meet the short-term operational needs of the laboratory and the long-tern lab mission, vision, and scorecard metrics.
  • Coordinates communication of all maintenance work orders to appropriate lab personnel and building maintenance supervisors.


Education:
  • Associates Degree in a chemical technology field or a Bachelor's Degree in a chemical related field. A minimum of two years of college chemistry is required.

Experience:
  • Three years of laboratory experience.
  • Previous leadership experience strongly desired.

Required Skills/Compentencies:
  • Strong oral & written communication skills with the ability to communicate with people in all levels of the organization.
  • Must be able to build strong relationships with peers, co-workers, management, and customers through effective communication, integrity, trust and respect.
  • Person needs to be a fair, credible individual in dealing with people and situations, remaining calm in high stress situations. Lead by sincere example.
  • Knowledge of petroleum testing and specifications is preferred.
  • Analytical chemistry skills preferred.

The Laboratory Supervisor has the primary responsibility for leading the day to day operations of the laboratory. They are accountable for the supervision of the lab technicians and engineering assistants. This includes ensuring the technician and engineering assistant accountabilities, responsibilities and expectations are all being met. They certify refinery products and issue off-specification notifications. The position will be a six month temporary assignment with a strong potential to extend and offer opportunities for growth in the future.
