Lead Mechanical Engineer

Purpose of the Job:

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is accountable for delivery of Front End Loading (FEL) providing support to management throughout construction and commissioning.  This position also recommends new, applicable technologies while supporting the management of intellectual assets.  The Lead Mechanical Engineer works to deliver continuous improvement to the project through the delivery of Lean Six Sigma projects and recommends courses of action for Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) resolution in accordance with policies and procedures.

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities:
  • Assure heritage standards (ACES, PEDGs) are kept accessible and updated as deemed appropriate
  • Assist with regular peer reviews of engineering practices with an emphasis to simplification and reliance on established industry practices (PIP, for example).
  • Maintain access to engineering standards which are maintained current with Engineering codes and practices
  • Selecting the most appropriate technology for the application
  • Manage intellectual assets
  • Defining and communicating the appropriate engineering specifications that will be utilized.
  • Ensuring that process and personal safety risks are mitigated to tolerances specified by PSM guidelines
  • Regular incorporation of feedback from Project Management
  • Provide appropriate deliverables for each stage of the project per capital project standards
  • Plot Plan of the facility
  • Materials of construction of process equipment (storage tanks, vessels, piping, etc.)
  • Piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Relief system (e.g., pressure safety valve, atmospheric vent, conservation vent, vacuum breaker, etc.) design including any vent header (e.g., manifold, flare system) and its basis
  • Ventilation system design (e.g., mechanical ventilation for buildings, local exhaust ventilation)
  • Drawings and/or design specifications for pressure vessels, atmospheric and low pressure tanks, piping systems and rotating equipment
  • Documentation of the design basis of safety systems (i.e., dikes, fire protection, insulation, firewalls, special suppression systems)
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Advanced degree in related field helpful
  • A minimum 10 to 15 years' experience in chemical, refining, or industrial manufacturing
  • Capital project experience with prior responsibility for facilitating critical engineering functions and practices
 Technical Skills:
  • Experience and knowledge of chemical/maintenance operations and regulation.
  • Experience and knowledge of API, ANSI, ASME Industry Standards.
  • Demonstrated cost saving initiatives and overall equipment life cycle cost management.
  • Knowledge of safety and quality management systems.
  • Ability to grasp technical aspects of Engineering Codes and Standards.
