SUMMARY:

Oil and Petroleum Laboratory Technician/Chemist performs laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES are but not limited to:

Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as chemical balance scales, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, colorimeters, centrifuges, viscometers, and other specialized equipment.

Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.

Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used. Prepares graphs and charts.

Maintains and Calibrates laboratory instruments.

Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.

Adds chemicals or raw materials to process solutions or products batches to correct or establish formulation required to meet specifications.

Works a weekly schedule including weekends, holidays and must be available to work on an on-call basis.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) - Some College and or College Degree preferable; and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to do some basic algebra, calculus, and trigonometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, AND REGISTRATIONS:

Valid driver's license required.
