Job Description and responsibilities

We are seeking a Graduate Embedded Software Engineer with an interest in Embedded software development.

You will be able apply your engineering skills to develop, implement and test embedded software for the operation and control of our complex electro-mechanical systems. Our tools are extremely complex as they might have to operate for periods in excess of 200 hours in extreme environments - high temperature (200 C), extreme pressure (30,000 Psi) and shocks (500 G's) - up to 30,000 ft from the rig, communicating with the surface through various methods. Within a multi-disciplinary team, you will collaborate with other experts (electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists, designers, etc.) to design the system. You will also perform technical planning for system integration, test and validation, authoring of functional specifications, and contribute to the development of new principles and concepts.

Successful candidates will be working with a co-located team of 20+ experienced engineers, made up of other software professionals. The software teams' work - to create scalable and optimized software systems for oil and gas drilling tools - has a meaningful impact on the business/industry, which offers good visibility and technical career progression within the company.


Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in Embedded Software Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Computing & Electronics Engineering or related field (recent graduate with less than 2 years of experience).


Required Skills:
  • Experience in programming C/C++ for embedded
  • Experience in using hardware & software tools, emulators, simulators, modelling, scopes, logic analysers
  • Version Control Experience e.g. GitHub etc

Exposure to any of the following would be a plus:
  • Unit Testing
  • FPGA VHDL/Industrial Verilog experience
  • Experience with RTOS e.g. FreeRTOS/OpenRTOS
  • Experience with ARM Processors e.g. Cortex M series
  • Knowledge on Electrical Schematics
  • Experience with National Instruments Hardware and Software Tools

Stonehouse Technology Centre (SHTC) is the Schlumberger drilling Centre of Excellence. It supports Schlumberger Oilfield Services through innovative engineering and quality-driven manufacturing, with portfolio emphasis on rotary steerable systems, downhole mud motors, and power source products. Over 300 employees work in SHTC's modern, fit-for-purpose building in scenic Gloucestershire. The facility was constructed to handle future demand for PowerDrive tools with an efficient workflow that ensures assembled tools are extensively and rigorously tested before delivery. On site, tools can be monitored using state of-the-art hardware and connectivity that link SHTC to all field locations. SHTC continues R&D investment for new technologies, extending operational limits so that clients can reach hotter, deeper reserves.

Annual Salary Range: from £34,000 to £46,000 depending on qualifications level
