The Industrial Hygienist is responsible for development and implementation of effective industrial hygiene programs and the workplace exposure assessment strategy for the refinery operations in accordance with applicable OSHA regulations. This job description is intended to provide an overview of the position and does not include all the tasks that might be required to provide support for your job requirements.Key accountabilities:

  • Conduct exposure assessments for all physical or chemical agents in the workplace which may present actual or potential exposure to employees
  • Functions as the technical authority for Noise
  • Evaluate, document and retain refinery records of qualitative and quantitative measurements and all related industrial hygiene regulatory required documentation such as employee exposure notifications
  • Coordinates chemical screening for all new chemicals in the refinery
  • Manages the refinery's Respiratory Protection Program. Periodically reviews the program to ensure its continued effectiveness and compliance with OSHA Standards
  • Coordinate, and at times, conduct training in respiratory protection, hearing conservation, lead awareness, and occupational exposure to hazardous physical and chemical agents, HAZCOM, and Radiation.
  • Participates in safety and industrial hygiene audits, inspections and plant walk-through
  • Manages the refinery's Hazard Communication Program as it relates to SDS revisions, storage, and distribution, employee training and labeling requirements for products and vessels
  • Provides support in safety as a specialist, which requires participation in the investigation of incidents, safety meetings and dissemination of lessons learned
  • Understands and is compliant with all Control of Work (CoW) and Process Safety policies and procedures
  • Subject to call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week
  • Monitor all physical and chemical agents in the environment to assess actual and potential exposure to employees.
  • Radiation Safety Officer responsible for the safety of the nuclear sources at the refinery and fulfillment of related regulatory requirements, including maintenance of the site license for radiation sources
  • Maintains the IH program according to OSHA regulations and good industry practices
  • Oversees IH consulting personnel and CoOp activities
  • Acts as consultant to operations management on hazardous substances and physical agents and methodologies for reduction of occupational exposure
  • Assists in response to public complaints of noise, odors and chemical releases. Takes appropriate measures to investigate claim
  • Manages the refinery's Lead Program, certification to allow lead sample collection
  • Provides professional advice and communicates with all levels of refining personnel regarding health, safety and toxicology matters
  • Advise management on completion of exposure assessments and consult with management on the methodologies for reduction of occupational exposure.
  • Develops industrial hygiene programs for the monitoring of potential exposures and to address IH concerns during all phases of operation including preplanned and emergency shutdowns

Essential education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required preferably a BSc in Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or M.S. Technical degree
  • Certified in Industrial Hygiene Comprehensive Practices (CIH)

Essential experience and job requirements:

  • 5 years working knowledge in HSSE
  • 3 - 5 years in a manufacturing or production business unit
  • Analyzing Problems/Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Systematically determine the root cause(s) of problems through questioning and inspecting, and then identify the best course of action to take
  • Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences to optimize or detect abnormal conditions within the process
  • The ability to multitask while performing job tasks, without being distracted
  • Assist in HAZOPs, MOC's, Incident Investigations, and Job Safety Analysis
