Role Summary:

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the development flow control equipment mainly control valves, safety relief valves, regulators and related products for Flow & Process Technologies division of Baker Hughes. Activities will include providing technical leadership and expertise to new product development, sustaining existing product design, specification, and validation. This role includes the solving of engineering problems, development of designs, creation of Computer Aided Design (CAD) models/drawings for valve components and assemblies, generate bills of materials, develop test plans and other related engineering duties.

Essential Responsibilities:

As a Lead Mechanical Engineer within the design/requisition engineering group the main focus of your responsibility will be to design and develop valves for the commercial and nuclear industry. In addition, you will support other functions (sustaining engineering, field service, etc) as needed. The environment & team you will find yourself in will be fast paced, highly collaborative, multi-discipline, and global. You will be working on projects that includes valve design, manufacturing, testing and system integration.

In the role of Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will:
  • Develop & innovate valves & actuator designs to comply with global codes, customer and sales expectations at lowest possible cost
  • Make use of required design tools, such as 3D CAD (SolidWorks), PLM and in-house design calculations
  • Work with Project Management to clearly establish & communicate business goals & customer requirements
  • Be responsible for working with internal & external customers to design products that meet customer, factory, & corporation objectives
  • Author or co-author updates to design practices as required
  • Report progress on projects to management and identify potential risks related to design, cost or schedule.
  • Follow best practices for valve design and utilize lessons learned from previous designs
  • Ensure design reviews with Controlled Title Engineers and Chief Engineers as appropriate
  • Work independently and/or collaboratively on projects as needed
  • Drive continuous improvement and simplification projects that eliminate waste and increase productivity
  • Stay current with academic & industry technology trends, conference proceedings, etc
  • Support local planning, manufacturing, and global sourcing organizations during product fulfillment
  • Ensure appropriate documentation (layout, spec, design assy / stack-up / specification studies, BoMs)
  • Coordinate and control the activities performed by external resources related to the assigned job
  • Support other BH engineering organizations as appropriate

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in product design, development, or application engineering
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Travel 10% of the time, as required

Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience in conducting FEA and CFD analysis to support design considerations
  • Safety and control valve design experience; Preferably, design experience in severe service applications such as safety relief valves, turbine bypass, cryogenic or other severe service applications
  • Knowledge of ASME BPVC, ASME B16.34, B16.5 and other related codes and standards;
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or similar Computer Aided Design software
  • Knowledge of exotic materials used in severe service applications
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles including fluid flow, heat transfer, and strengths of materials
  • Strong analytical problem-solving ability
  • Knowledgeable in use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Strong working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerance as it relates to individual parts and overall assemblies (ANSI Y14.5)
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments
  • Must be a quick learner
  • Working knowledge and use of numerical computing software such as MathCAD, MATLAB, or similar
  • Extensive knowledge of MS Office;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead and influence others without alienation
  • Experience presenting designs to peers, customers and upper management
