Oceaneering Space Systems (OSS) is a precision engineering and manufacturing group which specializes in turn-key design, development, manufacturing, certification, maintenance, and testing of extra-vehicular and intra-vehicular (EVA & IVA) tools and equipment for astronauts; including life support and environmental control systems for space; robotic systems for military, space, and biological research; and thermal protection systems for launch vehicles. We also provide specialized engineering and support services in these areas, and astronaut training in NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory.

Mechanical Engineers are responsible for component design, analysis, and test, as well as integration support at higher levels of assembly. The mechanical engineer is responsible for mechanical design and project tasks including requirements planning and assessment, design modeling, production support, testing, troubleshooting, corrective actions, and preparation for customer buy-off. The work is in direct support of NASA and includes ground prototypes as well as flight certified equipment to be used in low-earth orbit, deep space, and in planetary space missions.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Under supervision, responsible for design, analysis, production, testing, certification, and delivery of space-flight mechanical elements. Example disciplines include structures, and simple to complex mechanisms and electromechanical systems.
- Supports determination of the design concept and/or project approach based on evaluation of detailed or performance specifications.
- Supports determination of which technologies or approaches may be applicable. Defines test and certification requirements, and evaluates results to determine specification compliance.
- Supports the Project Manager in the technical definition of subcontractor and/or vendor activities which may form a part of the design activity.
- Assists the Project Manager in the support of the customer, including preparation of proposals, change requests, design reviews and other requirements related to the project.
- Interprets, analyzes and advises during the preparation of feasibility studies and during the selection and application of components.
- Understands systems requirements and is able to translate these into functional and design requirements.
- Drafts test and program requirements and participates in negotiations and/or exchanges as may be deemed necessary to obtain full agreement for these requirements by all concerned. Test requirements specifically include:
- 1) Definition of test parameters which provide the basis of design of special equipment when needed, and
- 2) Preparation of detailed plans and procedures which serve to control the manner by which the test is conducted.
- A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and 0-5 years experience.
- Hands-on experience in the design, analysis, production, and testing of structures or mechanisms is required.
- This position requires a broad mechanical engineering background and good written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with computer aided design software (CREO or Solidworks is preferred).
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and drafting standards.
- Knowledge of machine shop practices and production methods.
- Ability to interpret FEA results.
- Familiarity with writing assembly procedures and technical reports.
- Familiarity with space environmental testing such as thermal testing, thermal vacuum testing and vibration testing.
- Familiarity with technical risk assessment and mitigation.
