Shift supervisors are responsible for the shift to shift management of the operating plant in their assigned area, ensuring that their team achieves safe, reliable and cost-efficient operation as well as being accountable for the delivery of the shift team's annual priorities. They have full first-line responsibility for the management of a team of technicians, with a focus on empowering technicians to achieve their full potential. The Shift Supervisor takes direction from the Operations Team Lead for day-to-day activities

Typical areas of people responsibility will include resource allocation, arranging cover in accordance with the site protocols, managing any immediate performance issues and acting in a decision-making capacity on most shift-based activities.

As a supervisor, you are the focal point for communication for the shift. You'll ensure that all instructions are understood and completed by your shift team. As shift supervisor, you will provide the overview of asset performance, and use your team resources appropriately during periods of plant upsets, shutdowns and start-ups to ensure that the assets remain within the safe operating envelopes at all times

Accountability for the delivery of the shift team's annual priorities is a key area of responsibility in this role. You will agree and set individual tasks and objectives for your team, undertaking performance reviews, annual appraisals and salary reviews for the technicians in your team in conjunction with the Shift Site Manager

It will be your role to ensure that standards are maintained or improved for all aspects of the team's performance, including compliance with BP group and site procedures, routine checks, entries, shift handovers and housekeeping

A key part of the role is the responsibility for technician coaching and training. This includes the development and delivery of training plans. You'll act as HSSE champion for the shift team, promoting a safe working culture, and ensuring that unsafe events are recorded, initial investigation details are entered into BP reporting system and that any environmental breaches are immediately reported and corrective action is taken to bring the area back into its consents

As a supervisor, you will be the primary responsibility for administering the permit-to-work system,
undertaking HITRA assessments and ensuring that any maintenance preparations are correctly
undertaken and isolations correctly applied before and removed on completion of work

A significant portion of the site's maintenance activity starts with the identification of an issue or
potential issue by Shift Technicians. We expect our Shift Supervisors to be fully conversant with, and
actively use, the CMMS (SAP) to review Notifications and coach their teams as to the quality
expected to enable efficient review and action by the Maintenance Planners

You are expected to lead by example as a role model for BP's leadership values and behaviors,

  • You will hold an NVQ3 in Process Operations or an equivalent qualification combined with a proven ability in chemical plant or refinery operations
  • A good overall standard of attainment in formal qualifications (GCSE or equivalent) in relevant technical subjects are required
  • Ability to demonstrate effective people management skills, ideally gained in a shift team environment
  • Your communication skills will be good, and you'll show an aptitude for using IT systems efficiently
  • It is critical that you can provide evidence of your ability to uphold and embed high standards of values and behaviors into a team, and experience of doing this will be required for applicants to the role. You will be a truly effective leader, with the ability to influence and motivate individuals within a manufacturing environment;
  • A focused approach to safety with a strong commitment to continuous improvement in HSSE performance is critical, and we're looking for candidates with a proven track record of visibly and authentically putting safety at the top of the operating agenda
  • You will need strong planning and organisational skills, and you'll be someone with a performance-driven attitude, who can work effectively and collaboratively with minimal supervision
  • We need candidates with good troubleshooting skills, and the ability to resolve both process and basic maintenance issues.
