Brief Description

The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all repair work on motors and MWD tools and all equipment by monitoring work performance, performing quality audits, and ensuring certification compliance. Additionally, the Manager will be responsible for logistics of delivery and pickup of equipment and tools to rig locations, other MSD shop locations, and vendor facilities. Will also be responsible for scheduling and time approval of Shop Technicians, Quality Control, Inventory, and Shipping and Receiving employees. Will be involved in contributing to multiple products to achieve the tasks and assigned goals. The Manager will assist with accuracy of relevant reports in accordance with company policy and ensure equipment and tools meet operational expectations.


Detailed Description

  • Supervise shop personnel on a daily basis to provide work order assignments and required materials for job completion to maintain a minimal work order backlog. Shop personnel is defined as Shop Technicians (Motor and MWD), Quality Control, Inventory, Shipping and Receiving and Office Administration Employees.
  • Ensure shop personnel are performing all actions in accordance with Company standards to include safety, conduct, and proper use of company resources
  • Coordinate the proper utilization of third party contractors and service
  • Manage all aspects of the shop budget
  • Maintain an appropriate level of spare and replacement parts inventory to support shop operations
  • Coordinate parts and equipment as needed for projects
  • Provide timely reports on all shop projects with estimated completion time(s)
  • Review shop personnel assignments for work order quality and follow-up with performance improvement
  • Provide input for the Director to evaluate and review shop personnel as required by company policy
  • Ensure competency of shop personnel, and provide on-the-job instruction as needed

  • Receive all pre-well equipment planning information for assigned jobs
  • Work with MWD Tool Coordinators and MWD Coordinators to ensure all pre-well equipment requests are completed; and equipment is available
  • Monitor MWD Shop activities/daily performance and otherwise as needed
  • Schedule and approve hours worked of all shop technicians
  • Supports and collaborates with other MWD shop facilities
  • Assist Forensics staff with detailed reports on MWD tools and surface systems during troubleshooting
  • Complete other assignments associated with MS Directional business as directed
  • Work with in house teams with integration and test methodologies and present to customer's findings and reports on various drilling and product tests
  • Knowledge of statistical methodologies and techniques
  • Maintains communication with technical staff and field operations to be proactive in identifying performance and failure trends
  • Identifies opportunities for technological improvements / modifications to the company's product line and submits recommendations for new R&D projects
  • Works with management to create a priority list for projects and to create implementation plans for improvements made
  • Budget preparation and task scheduling
  • Monitor MWD/MS Directional activities/daily performance and otherwise as needed
  • Supports and collaborates with other departments within the organization
  • Interact with customers as needed or required

Job Requirements

  • Observe all company safety precautions and procedures as they pertain to various environments you or your staff may be exposed to
  • Knowledge and experience fabricating multiple types of structures, tanks, and other oilfield equipment
  • Effectively lead, manage, and develop employees to drive individual performance goals and ensure overall performance aligns with Company standards
  • Knowledge and familiarity with standards (ISO, API, OSHA, AWS, ASQ)
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings and ISOs
  • Knowledge of procurement and supply chain management for sourcing of material
  • Strong computer skills within MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact productively with coworkers and third parties

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience with Repair and Maintenance and MWD tool experience in directional drilling mud motor industry
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience in a shop environment


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification


Additional Details

The Manager must work with an emphasis on safety for themselves and others including coworkers and third parties. The typical work environment will be in the shop or field which will require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, working near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.


This job requires the ability to work under time-sensitive deadlines and maintain a calm and professional demeanor when adversity is encountered. It also requires the physical ability to work in office and shop environments including the ability to sit for long periods of time while performing office or computer tasks.
