The purpose of the Machinery Engineer is to create a culture of machinery excellence by encouraging safe machinery practices, cost effective machinery reliability and integrity. This purpose is achieved by:
1. Supporting Machinery Group plant safety standards and safety improvement initiatives.
2. Complying with Process Safety Management.
3. Promoting teamwork and technical capability with different disciplines.
4. Developing and applying machinery technical knowledge to design, repair and maintain machinery.
5. Educating others on the technical details of machinery and the impact on reliability.
6. Providing recommendations that are both technically and economically viable.
7. Representing and championing machinery reliability to internal customers.
8. Developing and maintaining long-term plans to minimize risk and maximize reliability.
The Machinery Engineer is accountable for overall machinery reliability for specific production unit(s) and plays a role in Refinery wide reliability. The successful candidate will be responsible for documenting machinery failures and establishing long-term improvement. Provide equipment repair costs optimized on a life cycle basis to meet performance objective. Key performance metrics include machinery related Production Losses, Environmental Events, Cost per Pump Repair-Yr, equipment Mean Time Between Maintenance, Frequency of Failure, Bad Actors List, TA performance indicators, successful commissioning of equipment and successful vital equipment repair.
The Machinery Engineer administratively reports to the Reliability-Rotating Supervisor and functionally reports to Production Unit(s) Managers.
The Machinery Engineer provides machinery technical support to specific Production Unit(s) and may have broader accountabilities as well. The Machinery Engineer, in concert with Machinery Inspector(s), is involved in day-to-day troubleshooting of refinery machinery including pumps, turbines, compressors, gearboxes, fans/blowers, etc. The Machinery Engineer also focuses on long-term objectives such as eliminating repeat failures, forecasting Capital needs, developing machinery turnaround work scope, conducting risk assessments and documenting changes through the MOC process.
Other key unit(s) responsibilities and activities include:
- Assess the state of different equipment populations (compressor, pump, blowers, etc.) and develop plans to make widespread improvements.
- Act as the unit(s) Machinery focal point and technical reviewer for Management of Change (MOC).
- Mentor and develop newer Engineers.
- Mentor Inspectors on economic and engineering principals.
- Communicate effectively with all disciplines to reduce confusion and promote considerate dialogue.
- Build strong relationships with unit Inspector and Operations personnel.
- Proactively review work processes for opportunities and provide comprehensive sustainable solutions to unit issues.
- Develop and review operating procedures.
- Develop and review maintenance procedures
- Assist in commissioning of machinery after maintenance and turnarounds.
- Develop formal Technical Requirements for internal and external equipment overhauls.
- Support or lead team in risk analysis and cost / benefit justification.
- Support or lead team in root cause analysis, identifying system causes, and fully implementing long-term recommendation(s) to prevent reoccurrence.
- Support Turnarounds to meet performance objectives of safety, environment, cost, schedule, quality, contractor strategy and field execution.
- Develop and implement long-range plans and infrastructure projects.
- Assist the Capital Project Group in equipment upgrades, field installation and start-up. Ensure equipment acquisition process as proposed is strictly followed. Prevent Bad Actor(s) from entering the plant and work together to optimize life cycle solutions.

- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required. Professional Engineer certification is an advantage.
- Minimum five (5) years experience in refinery, petrochemical or industrial machinery design, repair and maintenance.
- Must have strong understanding of steam turbines, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, centrifugal and positive displacement compressors, lubrication systems, mechanical seals and vibration monitoring equipment.
- Familiarity with machinery performance analysis including compressor / pump efficiency evaluation, vibration analysis and hydraulic analysis.
- Demonstrated familiarity with national codes and standards such as API, ANSI and ASME is a plus.
- Highly effective people skills with demonstrated ability to work in teams with a diverse work group including crafts persons, vendors and various Engineering disciplines.
- Experience with risk assessment processes and the ability to identify threats, communicate potential impact and build a strong case for action to mitigate the threat cost effectively a plus.
- Experience with design, specification and procuring of machinery equipment and systems is an advantage.
