Role Summary:

The Lead HSE Specialist will provide help and support in relation to all HSE matters within the Barnsdall Chemical Manufacturing plant, ensuring adherence to all internal HSE policies and external Legal requirements

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and executes safety and environmental programs to ensure practical, cost-effective measures are in place within the workplace, and an appropriate Culture exists to ensure employees are accountable and responsible for health, safety and environmental conditions and practices
  • Prepare and maintain federal, state and local regulatory required reports, plans, permits, and procedures, including but not limited to: OSHA 300, HAZCOM, Chemical Hygiene, and Accident/Incident investigation
  • Influence and mentor facility leadership toward the strengthening of an Interdependent HSE Culture
  • Facilitate or lead incident investigations as well as the development and assessment of corrective and preventative actions, and is responsible for compliance of reporting both internally and to external bodies
  • Analyze incident and near miss trends to identify emerging issues and recommend corrective actions
  • Oversee employee health programs including chemical risk assessment, respiratory protection, ergonomics and hearing protection
  • Serve as HSE specialist for process hazard analyses, management of change, incident investigation, hot work permitting, emergency planning and response
  • Facilitates implementation of HSE program requirements within the HSE Management System to ensure practical, cost-effective measures are in place within the workplace
  • Conducts safety and/or environmental audits and inspects facilities within area of responsibility to ensure a safe working environment and compliance with regulatory laws
  • Monitors and actions all HSE compliance training requirements for employees under area of responsibility
  • Support the continual maintenance of risk assessments/health hazards
  • Deliver HSE training/awareness sessions as appropriate
  • Handles more difficult, complex HSE assignments as needed and special projects, as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience in HSE
  • Thorough understanding of HSE regulations and the regulatory process
  • Strong industrial safety background
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, team building and influencing skills
  • Thorough understanding of safety and environmental regulations and regulatory process
  • Ability to research, analyze, interpret and implement HSE regulations, standards, and best practices
  • Ability to work independently and see projects through completion
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Experience in HSE management systems and auditing
  • Experience in root cause investigation techniques
  • Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship

Desired Characteristics:

  • Designation as a CSP, CIH, CHMM
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001
  • Experience with Emergency Preparedness
  • Experience with Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (OSHA 1910.119)
