The Reliability Engineer reports directly to the Refinery's Reliability Manager and provides the necessary support to accomplish the refinery's objectives in the most safe, economical and technically feasible manner. This position is responsible for providing engineering services to optimize equipment life and plant profitability. He/she will be assigned to an Operating Area Superintendent to provide support for those areas.


  • Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with all Calumet procedures

  • Champion the reliability efforts in assigned areas of responsibility by providing technical assistance in resolving equipment design, operation, and maintenance problems

  • Coordinate Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes and track the implementation of recommendations through resolution

  • Utilize reliability tools such as failure calculations, failure evaluations, and cost and risk analysis to evaluate and prioritize reliability issues

  • Participate in audits to measure the effectiveness of reliability related activities such as equipment repairs, and failure investigation processes

  • Assist Operations and Maintenance Departments in developing procedures, training, and processes to ensure equipment is operated within its design parameters

  • Conduct life cycle cost analysis on new and critical equipment

  • Recommend projects and/or studies to Engineering to support operating area reliability

  • Develop cost justification for reliability improvement

  • Identify and maintain an active top ten high impact-operations area equipment list

  • Train on new technologies and methods for maintaining equipment to increase reliability

  • Serve as project manager on small maintenance and/or capital projects within the operating area

  • Coordinate with Operations, Engineering and Maintenance on planned and unplanned repair activities within the operating area

  • Assist Operating Superintendents in budget management/tracking, MOC execution, and other management functions

  • Participate as an active member of the Operations asset team through leader walks, review of Maintelligence data, maintenance planning/scheduling and other duties as assigned by the Operating Superintendents

  • Additional duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's Degree required, major in Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Minimum of three (3) years-experience in refinery or petrochemical plant related positions

  • Flexible and willing to work rotating shifts as needed - including overtime and nights/weekend callouts as conditions require


  • Excellent communication skills, including oral, written, and electronic

  • Ability to manage multiple activities and prioritize tasks with minimal direction or oversight

  • Knowledge of root cause analysis and very strong troubleshooting capability

  • Proven safety experience/training and leadership regarding oil and gas operations including but not limited to: confined space, lock out tag out, hot work, safe work permits, personal protective equipment, and other critical safety procedures

  • Ability to learn any potential new Engineering processes/systems and equipment quickly

  • Must possess strong computer skills



  • Working knowledge of functions and design/operati on of plant equipment, process and products; methods development and procedures; repair maintenance of equipment; ability to prepare, administer, and monitor departmental budgets

  • Background in performing root cause failure analyses, developing corrective action plans and tracking equipment KPI's
