Role Summary:

This position serves as the primary point of contact regarding all labor and employment issues arising in the North America region, and reports to the Global Labor and Employment Counsel.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Actively manages litigation, including handling employment mediations and arbitrations in-house
  • Advises management on due diligence activities related to mergers, acquisitions, and disposition of businesses
  • Working knowledge of how US laws may impact employee concerns across borders. Ability to identify international law issues and compliant resolution of issues under multiple jurisdictions in cooperation with legal counterparts in other countries.
  • Represents and advises Human Resources and people leaders on performance management, employee separations and redundancies, wage & hour compliance, ADA/FMLA issues, military leave law, civil rights laws, unfair employment practices, harassment prevention training, union organizing, collective bargaining, discrimination litigation, and working time regulations
  • Advises HR in developing and implementing training content around fair labor employment practices
  • Manages restructuring activities and plant closings with minimal legal exposure
  • Manages labor contract negotiations and arbitrations
  • Oversees the administration of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Program, minimizing legal exposure
  • Actively manages outside legal counsel, overseeing their cases to ensure the highest quality of legal support and case resolution
  • Stays current on changes to applicable labor and employment law across North America, advising region management on how to stay compliant and mitigate risks associated with changes; benchmarks with external companies to ensure we are up-to-date on best practices

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Experience in resolving international legal issues across borders and multi jurisdictions
  • Law Degree from an ABA accredited college or university
  • Minimum 8 years of experience as an attorney in a corporate law department or law firm, with specific experience in labor and employment

Eligibility Requirements:

Travel 25% of the time, as required

  • Excellent analytical ability, legal drafting, and negotiation skills
  • The ability to present complex legal information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
  • Proficient and effective communication skills in both oral and written form, including strong presentation skills
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, hands-on environment involving many stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Substantial experience working with different cultures; an open and tolerant mind with respect to diversity
  • Certification by the Board of Texas Legal Specialization in Labor & Employment Law is a plus
