BUILDING INSPECTOR - COMMERCIAL
To perform technical building inspection work to enforce compliance with building codes, regulations and ordinances.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the Building Inspection Supervisor and the Chief of Building and Safety
Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by demonstrating a willingness to be attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful, and to actively participate in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
Inspect commercial, industrial and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
Examine plans and specifications of new construction, additions and alterations to residential, commercial and industrial buildings to determine compliance with the provisions of applicable construction codes, ordinances and regulations.
Inspect existing buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy, or compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
Inspect foundation, concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating and electrical installations and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements.
Issue notices for violation compliance; maintain records of history of facts for possible legal actions.
Approve the issuance of building and zoning permits based on level of assigned duties.
Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the public in the field and office; explain and interpret building requirements and restrictions.
Log, route, track, and process all incoming plans; respond to code and related questions in person and on the phone.
Maintain files and reports regarding inspection and plan check activities and findings.
Attend and participate in meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of building inspection and plans examination.
Conduct inspections and review plans for seismic safety precautions and code compliance.
Work with the Neighborhood Improvement Task Force performing code enforcement work.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
High School Diploma/Associates Degree (preferred)
ICC Commercial Combination certification
ICC CBO or MCP (preferred)
2-5 years' experience as a certified inspector performing multi-code building inspections
Works primarily in an outdoor environment which includes construction/project sites and requires moving about safely; climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces; stooping, crawling, working in difficult weather conditions (hot and cold), working in confined areas; and working around various construction equipment. Office duties include sitting for periods of time.
