Job Summary

The position is for a Lead Automation Engineer as part of the Company's LNG Engineering team reporting to the ISBL Project Engineer with responsibility for Automation for the entire facilities including ISBL and OSBL. The position will also work closely with the Electrical/I&C Manager. The Lead Automation Engineer will supervise the ISBL Automation Engineer and ISBL Instrumentation/Controls Engineer. The position is located in Milan, Italy.

The position requires an up-to-date working knowledge of Automation Systems within a large LNG Complex including DCS, SIS, FGS, Telecomms, Networking, Security and relevant Industry Codes and Standards associated with a multiple train LNG facility. The position requires in-depth knowledge and previous experience with LNG plant Automation and control systems. The position requires an in-depth knowledge and previous work experience associated with LNG Train Process Safety systems, practices, codes and standards.

Key activities include oversight and review of EPC Contractor's Automation engineering scopes of work and interfacing with the LNG Engineering team's other Process, Instrumentation, Automation and Electrical Engineers. In addition, the Lead Automation Engineer will interface with the subsea engineering team via the Interface Engineer to insure all automation systems tied to the subsea system are integrated with the overall LNG facility.


The successful candidate will have general experience in the following:

  • Minimum 15 years' experience in LNG / Gas Processing / Refinery and/or petrochemical industries

  • Minimum 10 years of detail Automation & control systems engineering experience in lead roles and/or specialization.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience or one (1) complete LNG project as Lead Automation Engineer
  • In depth knowledge of appropriate codes, standards and good engineering practices specifically within the LNG and gas processing Industry

  • In depth knowledge of process safety related processes including QRA, FRA, ERA and how these relate to design and performance of automation systems

  • Expert-level knowledge of Control Systems including DCS, SIS, FGS and Power management

  • Expert-level knowledge of control schemes associated with LNG production and specifically liquefaction units

  • Expert-level knowledge of process blow-down requirements, staging, sequencing and initiation

  • Previous experience with fire and gas system designs based on use of Fire and Gas Mapping software

  • In-depth knowledge of process safety systems required in LNG facilities including codes standards, design details, equipment, SIL determination

  • High-level knowledge of business enterprise networks and interfaces with ICSS

  • Significant experience in a similar role(s) on a large scale LNG project(s)

  • Liaise with Area 4 Operator as required for Automation scopes

  • Significant experience or with APCI C3MR liquefaction process

  • Effective communication and leadership skills

  • Proven ability to manage, influence and liaise with contractors, subcontractors, clients and other key stakeholders in the engineering office

  • Proven ability to manage and influence a team and develop an effective culture through respect and by example


  • Lead the automation design oversight effort for the entire facility. Liaise with EPC contractor staff in the performance of the detailed engineering, including review of specifications, drawings, progress and other activities required

  • Directly supervise the ISBL Instrumentation and Control Engineer and Automation Engineer

  • Indirectly provide oversight and guidance to the OSBL Instrumentation and Control Engineer and Electrical Engineer with respect to Automation system design

  • Ensure the technical integrity of the EPC contractor's Automation engineering and design during EPC execution

  • Ensure all process safety requirements including codes, standards, design details, equipment, and SIL determination are incorporated and addressed in the Automation system design

  • Participate in FATs for DCS/ESD/F&G systems with Automation Engineer

  • Proactively manage the automation system overall cost and schedule; closely monitor the EPC Contractor's work product and raise any issues with the ISBL Project Engineer and Electrical / I&C Manager

  • Participate in P&ID reviews, HAZOP and other safety review meetings

  • Review the appropriate EPC deliverables, not necessarily limited to Automation areas

  • Monitor EPC Contractor discipline progress and quality and confirm they are acceptable.If progress and/or quality is not acceptable, inform and work with ISBL Project Engineer and PMT Management to improve performance to an acceptable level

  • Liaise, as necessary, with other parts of the Mozambique LNG project, such as Subsea, to ensure a consistent automation approach is taken to all project facilities. Interface and work closely with EPC Contractor's Lead ISBL Automation engineer; Liaise and coordinate with OSBL Automation engineer and Automation/Controls Engineer reporting to Electrical/I&C Manage

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering


Fluent oral and written knowledge of English

Work Schedule

This position is considered a full time embedded contractor to AMA1 and will be located at the project office in Milan, Italy
