Chevron Oronite Company LLC is a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of performance additives for fuels and lubricating oils. We are a global company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chevron Corporation. Our research is focused on developing additives that control oxidation, friction, wear, viscosity, and deposit formation, and combining these in formulations that effectively lubricate a diverse range of equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems used in automobiles, trucks, ships, trains, tractors, and other equipment.

This job posting is for a Lubricant Additive Research and Development Formulator in Oronite's Automotive (passenger car and heavy duty diesel) Engine Oil Group. The job responsibilities include the development of innovative formulation technologies and products to meet evolving lubrication needs for advanced engines. Current focus areas are fuel economy, wear, and engine cleanliness protection. The position entails developing and applying chemical and physical understanding of additive responses in the complex, multi-phase environment that oils experience in an engine. Of interest are the interactions between different lubricant chemistries and various engine performance parameters. The Automotive Engine Oil Formulator must coordinate and work in multi-discplinary teams that are made up of synthetic component chemists, physical chemists, tribologists, and engine hardware engineers with the goal to define new formulation products. The Formulator also works closely with product managers and sales, technicians, other Formulators, as well as external customers and OEM stakeholders to ensure products are successful in meeting the needs of the market. Strong teamwork, team leadership and project management skills are required. Academic background in chemical or mechanical engineering, chemistry or tribology is required. A working knowledge of internal combustion engine design and operating principles is desired. Experience in experimental design and data analytics is also desired.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in and/or lead formulation technology and product development activities, develop new and improved understanding and tools, and share this knowledge with other formulators. The applicant will design and execute experiments to define additive responses in key performance tests and use this data to create formulation products that meet evolving industry and customer requirements. The candidate will be required to present engine oil formulation technology solutions internally to sales and marketing as well as externally to Oronite customers and OEMs. The job can entail representation of the company in industry organizations such as ASTM, SAE, and STLE. Publication of technical papers, creation of intellectual property, and presentation of technical findings both internally and externally is expected.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

• Lead product development projects through stage gate or Agile development processes.

• Develop and share understanding of automotive engine oils and impacts on engine performance.

• Participate and lead research programs related to additive appetite in bench and engine tests in cooperation with global R&D team.

• Work with statisticians to create statistical models based on experimental results and analysis of existing data

• Participate in development of screener tests to simulate full scale engine tests.

• Develop engine oil formulations based on application of models and experiments.

• Support of marketing and sales teams via presentation of technology topics to Oronite customers.

• Participation in industry activities related to focus area.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum B.S. in Chemical / Mechanical Engineering, Tribology, or Chemistry.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment with strong Chevron Way Behaviors, especially teamwork and communications.
  • Knowledge of lubricants, additives, tribology/lubrication, and engines.
  • Successful Research and Development experience.
  • Experience planning and organizing complex projects in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • *Travel Requirements: Occasional domestic and international travel is expected.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Advanced degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or Ph.D. in Chemistry with experience in lubrication and/or tribology and/or Internal Combustion Engines.

    Educational Requirements:

    • Minimum B.S. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or Tribology. Advanced degree strongly preferred.

    Relocation Options:
