Job Summary
Will be responsible for the design development of various mechanical and drilling systems for the working fleet, new build, conversion, refurbishment, and upgrades of offshore drilling units. This responsibility includes the review and approval of designs for onboard mechanical installations, development of layouts, development of scopes of work, procurement specifications, technical support and resolution of engineering issues. The position will also require support in resolution of technical issues raised by the operating rigs from the Field Support Groups, which are related to mechanical equipment and systems.
Ensure engineering related work conducted by project and/or departmental engineers complies with Transocean and industry standards. Develops and provides technical options to optimize operations of the vessels within the fleet.
Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational Technical Support

Execute, review and approve engineering drawings, solutions and calculations in compliance with Transocean, Classification and Regulatory Rules and industry standards .
Monitors assignment and completion of work to ensure proper interdisciplinary (internal to own team and with other teams and functions) collaboration and interaction.
Periodically review technical task lists and engineering requests. Confirming they are executed in a safe and timely manner.
Ensure that the mechanical engineering team is engaged in the company's effort to continuously improve and update maintenance plans.
Collaborate with and support reliability group as required.
Ensure that technical specifications for major new equipment are properly developed and implemented.
Coordinates the work of drafters to ensure the quality of the design criteria is met.
Organize technical discussions with subcontractors and vendors in order to specify designs or systems necessary for an engineering project.
Attend, when requested, vessel inspections to define the scope of work required for equipment additions, modifications, repairs and conversions.
Support and assist rigs operations staff, or shipyard teams, with their technical queries and coordinate resolution as required.
Work with the marketing department to review the technical aspects of bids as required

Sponsor and validate engineering work on major projects

Participate in feasibility and in design reviews to insure work complies with Company standards and policies, especially when departures from proven technology are involved.
Ensure that internal and external engineering support for major projects is properly executed, commissioned, reviewed, and approved/validated.
Promote proper discipline representation on project mechanical engineering teams.

Provide expert technical advice and assistance during downtime events and incidents

Support and coordinate with other functions, as required, to ensure that all incidents of technical nature are fully supported during recovery, are properly investigated to establish root cause, and that any lessons that emerge from the incident are embedded into our management system.
Ensure compliance with company troubleshooting and event management procedure.

Promote technical development within Company

Participate in regularly scheduled technical meeting with key vendors and class societies.
Seek ways to improve rig operating efficiency and safety.
Review and develop technical bulletins as required to optimize or resolve mechanical system issues for offshore installations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
University degree in Engineering is required. B.SC. or M.SC. in Mechanical Engineering. Advanced degree in related field and industry courses in drilling operation and technology is desirable.

EXPERIENCE:
Extensive mechanical engineering experience in offshore drilling rigs. Min five years of experience in a technical capacity is required. Experience with classification societies and regulatory agencies is essential with two years of experience in a technical managerial capacity is preferred.

SKILLS:
Proficient in all types of business communications skills, including industry presentations, technical writing in specialized area of engineering and technical support.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to lead and exert effective guidance and supervision over personnel in the department to achieve common goals.
Can undertake independent worldwide assignments with vendors, consultants, shipyards, client offices, and drilling locations. The position requires the individual to travel internationally when required.

Knowledge of ACAD is a must.

Knowledge of drilling industry and oilfield equipment.
A good knowledge of the following drilling vessel systems will be beneficial:
a) main vessel utilities pipe and pumping systems for ballast, bilge, drill water, potable water, salt water service & cooling, engine cooling, sanitary, and drain systems.
b) fire and safety systems, CO2, deluge, fire mains & hydrants, foam and sprinklers, lifeboats, and life rafts.
c) mooring equipment and main propulsion equipment.
d) main drilling equipment, drawworks, rotary tables, TDS, mud pumps, mud systems, compensation systems and riser tensioner systems .
e) HVAC, air conditioning, and marine ventilation systems
f) rig main power generating equipment and auxiliary machine equipment, engine fuel systems, air compressors & dryers, and water making equipment, boilers and steam generators .

MENTORING
Provide mentoring to discipline engineers.
Assist in selection of new personnel, responsible for performance appraisals and training plans of individuals in mechanical engineering group
Provide mentoring to appropriate team members.

WORKS WITH:
Operations team /Department Leads/ Discipline Managers/ Department Engineers/ Technical services and support team.

DECISION MAKING:
Acts independently in developing all technical information. Recommends for management approval, all technical actions or options which have significant financial impacts.
