Bay of Campeche Subsea Tieback Contract Goes to McDermott
Pemex has selected McDermott to install two rigid flowlines for its Ayatsil field, which is located in the Bay of Campeche.

PEMEX Exploración y Producción has selected McDermott to install two rigid flowlines for its Ayatsil field, which is located in the Bay of Campeche 50 miles northwest of Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico, McDermott reported Wednesday afternoon.

“This award follows on the proven track record we have had in Mexico with PEMEX – including the fabrication and installation of the Ayatsil-C platform and the fabrication and future installation of Abkatun,” Richard Heo, McDermott’s senior vice president for North, Central and South America, said in a written statement. “This opportunity enables us to demonstrate our subsea capabilities in offshore Mexico. We look forward to working closely with PEMEX to successfully delivering this project with safety and quality at the forefront throughout the execution.”

Under the lump-sum contract, McDermott will perform design and detailed engineering, procurement, construction and installation of two subsea pipelines. The specifications for each pipeline are as follows:

  • The first line (L1) will be a 24-inch natural gas pipeline extending approximately 1.9 miles (3.2 kilometers) and will connect the PP-Ayatsil-C and PP-Ayatsil-A platforms.
  • The second line (L10) will be an 8-inch oil pipeline extending 0.9 of a mile (1.5 kilometers) and connect to the PP-Ayatsil-C platform.

According to McDermott, which will conduct project management and engineering out of its Mexico City operating center, the Ayatsil heavy crude oil field is PEMEX’s largest discovery to date. The subsea pipelines, which will be located in approximately 375- to 400-foot (114- to 121-meter) water depths, will contribute to PEMEX’s goal of increasing heavy crude oil production, McDermott added.

McDermott described the contract as “sizable.” By the company’s definition, that translates into a value ranging from $1 million to $50 million. The offshore installation should conclude early next year.
