What Has Made 2017 Memorable in the Downstream?
Our industries faced severe hurricanes this year and proved their resilience, despite unprecedented storms. Through lessons learned in the past, hard work, and with the help of an incredibly dedicated workforce, both refiners and petrochemical manufactures returned online in short order with minimal disruption to the supply chain. This response is a reflection on the safety of our operations, commitment to our employees and communities, all while ensuring Americans had access to the fuels and products necessary for modern life. –Michael Frohlich, Manager, Communications, American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers
A Final Note about Downstream Hiring
In many markets there always seems to be a trending need for specific disciplines. There would be times when every upstream operator was seeking a reservoir engineer with a very specific artificial-lift experience or everybody was looking for super-completions qualified engineering managers. However, when you look across the hiring in downstream for 2017 there is just as heavy an emphasis on business analysts, business developers, traders, originators, buyers and software professionals as there were for technical positions and labor/transportation jobs.
While there has been no explosive growth in process manager or chemical engineering roles, there has been a constant flow which has been consistent for the last four or five years and we expect the same going into 2018. We do expect to see an uptick for many related service, engineering and consulting firms. The EPC companies focused on Downstream Assets have seen and will continue to see growth in new construction contracts along with following contracts for operations and maintenance services. –Christopher Melillo, Managing Partner, Practice Leader, Energy Practice, Kaye/Bassman International Corp.
