Total to Lay Off 200 Workers in Denmark
Total S.A. is laying off 200 workers in its Danish North Sea operations, the French oil major announced Thursday.
The company plans to restructure its Danish oil and gas operations in Esbjerg, resulting in up to 200 employees and contractors being laid off.
There will also be a temporary reduction of the company’s Danish North Sea production by 40 percent as Total redevelops its Tyra gas fields. Production from the Tyra fields will shut-in at the end of 2019 and will be back on stream in 2022.
“We see an interesting potential in Denmark, and we want to become more competitive to continue unlocking the potential of the increasingly challenging Danish subsurface in a sustainable manner,” Patrick Gully, managing director for Total’s Danish North Sea operations, said in a company statement.
He said the reorganization “will transform” the way they work.
“Unfortunately, the changes mean that a number of valued colleagues will leave us,” he added. “During this difficult process, we will do our best to support those impacted. We will seek to reduce compulsory redundancies by offering our employees alternative positions in the Total Group.”
Prior to the layoffs, Total exploration and production unit based in Esbjerg, Denmark had 1,500 employees.
