10. McDermott Wins 25-tank Saudi Contract from Samsung

As this staff-written article from July states, Samsung Engineering Saudi Arabia Co. Ltd. awarded McDermott International, Inc. a lump sum contract for a total of 25 storage tanks for Jubail United Petrochemical Co. Ethylene Oxide (EO)/Ethylene Glycol (EG) Plant No. 3 in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Samsung is building a $700 million EO/EG plant at Jubail Industrial City and expects construction to conclude in 2020.

9. US Supertanker Terminal Set to Export Oil for First Time

For decades, the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) has been a top U.S. crude oil import terminal. Given the abundance in domestic crude supplies, however, the United States has become a crude oil exporter. As a result, LOOP – along with other terminals – have had to adapt. This Bloomberg article from February discusses tests to prepare LOOP to load its first ever crude export cargo – and its ability to load very large crude carrier (VLCC) vessels.

8. Texas City Hosts First Supertanker as US Crude Gushes Out

In another sign of the United States’ emergence as a major oil exporter, this April article from Bloomberg details the maiden arrival of a VLCC at Enterprise Products Partners LP’s terminal in Texas City, Texas. The Nave Quasar supertanker arrived at the terminal to determine measurements for future VLCC loadings given the need to increase the site’s water depth, the article states.

The latest oil market downturn has been particularly harsh in Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta. According to this November Bloomberg article, pipeline bottlenecks, rising inventories and declining oil prices have put Canadian producers at a disadvantage and have put a strain on Canada’s economy. The situation has prompted representatives of Canada’s oil industry and government to weigh various options to alleviate the effects of the price crunch. One option, as this article discusses, is to build new refineries in Alberta.

6. Saudi Aramco Taps Saipem for Pipeline System Contract

One of the more popular 2018 downstream articles on Rigzone was this July staff-written piece detailing Saipem’s receipt of onshore contracts in Asia, Europe, North America and Africa totaling approximately $800 million. In one instance, Saudi Aramco awarded Saipem a procurement and construction contract for its South Gas Compression Plant Pipelines tied to development of the Haradh gas plant in eastern Saudi Arabia. Also, Saipem reported that it had won various contracts from ExxonMobil Iraq Limited, Pemex and others.
