Tech Not Making Oil Qualifications Less Important

Technology is not making oil and gas qualifications less important, according to Jason Urso, vice president and general manager at Honeywell.

Rigzone questioned the Honeywell representative on the matter during an interview at a recent conference in Madrid. This followed a presentation by Urso that included a live stage demonstration of a field procedure using an augmented reality wearable, which provided step by step instructions on how to complete the task at hand.

“I think technology is eliminating variability. I think we still need to have qualified people that have the right base competency and then we can augment that competency with training on demand or digital procedures, but I think it’s more that a base level of competency is still required,” Urso told Rigzone.

“Even though we can do a lot of math on calculators and our smartphones, we still go and do fundamental learning. You have to have that base level of knowledge, because without it something goes a little bit wrong from a basic procedure and you don’t understand anymore about ‘what does that mean?’ and ‘how do I cognitively deal with this circumstance?’” he added.

“That base level of competency I think is still required but we can augment it with tools to drive consistency and take variability out,” Urso continued.
