Shell Appoints New Upstream Director
Royal Dutch Shell plc has appointed Wael Sawan as its new upstream director, with effect from July 1.
As part of his new role, Sawan, who will take over from Andy Brown, will become a member of the executive committee. Brown will remain available to Sawan and the executive committee to assist with the transition until September 30 and will then leave the company.
“I am grateful to Andy for his strong leadership of the upstream business, particularly having improved business performance during the recent years of low oil price,” Ben van Beurden, Shell chief executive, said in a company statement.
“Through his disciplined focus on efficiency, portfolio optimization, safety and talent development he leaves our upstream business fit for the future,” he added.
Sawan, who is currently the executive vice president of deepwater, joined Shell in 1997. He has held a variety of commercial and operational leadership roles across the company’s upstream, integrated gas and downstream businesses.
Brown joined Shell after completing his degree in engineering science at Cambridge University and was appointed to the company’s executive committee in April 2012. He was awarded an OBE in the 2012 New Year’s Honors List for his services to British-Qatari business relations.
Shell’s executive committee operates under the direction of the CEO and is responsible for the company’s overall business and affairs.
