Seatrium Ltd.’s U.S. unit, Seatrium Letourneau USA Inc. (SLET), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cochin Shipyard (CSL) to collaborate on the design and supply of critical equipment for jack-up rigs for the Indian market.

Seatrium said in a media release that the partners aim to capitalize on the opportunities for Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs). The pair will leverage CSL’s ship construction experience and engineering and SLET’s technical expertise and design capabilities to design MODUs specifically to meet the demands of the Indian market.

For Seatrium, this collaboration with CSL represents a milestone as it looks to advance solutions for India’s offshore energy industry.

State-backed CSL is pioneering high-tech, green shipbuilding in India. Over recent years India’s shipyards have accumulated shipbuilding know-how and technology with a concerted effort by the government, according to global assurance and risk management company DNV. DNV said 50 percent of CSL’s current order book consists of green vessels. All of its vessels are designed under DNV classification.

“DNV has been an important partner to us for nearly 21 years”, Madhu Nair, Chairman and Managing Director at CSL, said. “The relationship developed along with the shipyard and was instrumental in linking us with the Norwegian maritime cluster, which has also helped our efforts to build up more capacity in the equipment segment. There is a DNV office at our yard, and being able to rely on DNV-assured technology has been a great advantage. As the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ government initiatives to grow our domestic supply chain gather pace, we want to use more and more DNV-certified products made in India”.
