PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, PT Pertamina’s downstream oil and gas business, has agreed to deliver hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) to PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale), supporting the green energy transition in the mining sector.

PT Vale became a pioneer in adopting the HVO, following a memorandum of understanding the two companies signed in September.

“The HVO utilization, or Pertamina Renewable Diesel, not only offers a sustainable fuel solution but also enhances operational efficiency in the mining sector”, Maya Kusmaya, Director of Central Marketing and Trading of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, said. “It aligns with the government's goals and our commitment to achieving energy self-sufficiency. Notably, HVO boasts a domestic component level (TKDN) of over 99 percent. We hope this collaboration inspires other sectors to transition to clean energy for a greener future”.

“HVO adoption is a strategic step towards our decarbonization targets. Beyond operational efficiency, this fuel significantly reduces environmental impact. We are proud to lead this innovation in Indonesia's mining sector”, Abu Ashar, Director and Chief Operation and Infrastructure Officer of PT Vale, said.

In trials, a Komatsu and a Caterpillar mining truck were powered by HVO, resulting in a decrease of carbon emissions by as much as 70 percent and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent relative to standard diesel.

“We have observed that HVO maintains mining trucks’ performance while delivering cleaner emissions. This is highly beneficial for the sustainability of our heavy equipment operations in the mining industry and aligns with our commitment to using environmentally friendly fuels”, Director of Product Support at PT United Tractors Tbk, Idot Supriadi said.

Semuel Tikupadang, Product Support Manager at PT Trakindo Utama, said the company tests have proven that the HVO is compatible, requiring no additional spare parts or engine modifications.
