Papua New Guinea Well Hits Gas

Oil Search revealed Thursday that the Kimu 2 appraisal well, located in the forelands region of Papua New Guinea, has encountered gas in the target Alene reservoir.

A drill stem test undertaken over the Alene sandstone interval flowed at a continuous rate of 34.5 million cubic feet per day over a 72-hour period, through a 1” choke, according to Oil Search.

The company said provisional interpretation of the Alene Sandstone at this location is that it has similar reservoir properties to the Kimu 1 well and “a slightly greater” reservoir thickness. Oil Search also said the reservoir appears to be in pressure communication with Kimu 1.

Kimu 2 will now be plugged and abandoned. Evaluation of the well data acquired has now commenced and will be used to help assess options for the potential commercialization of the Kimu field, Oil Search confirmed.

Spudded on April 22, Kimu 2 reached a total depth of 6,374 feet on May 20. Oil Search is the operator of the well.
