U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday picked former Justice Department inspector general Michael Bromwich to lead the Minerals Management Service, according to reports from Fox Business Network and the Washington Post. Bromwich is expected to oversee a planned reorganization of the agency.
The MMS, which is under the authority of the Interior Department, has been criticized for its allegedly lax regulation of the oil drilling industry in light of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Elizabeth Birnbaum resigned as director of the MMS last month.
