Queen's Award Marks Successful Growth for OCL

Oil Consultants Ltd. (OCL) has received the award for outstanding achievement in international trade -- marked by the company's success in nearly trebling its overseas earnings to more than £8m in just three years to 2009.

The company is based in North East England and is also registered in Norway, Denmark, Trinidad and China. It provides sub-contract engineering personnel to the global oil industry, specializing in the drilling, maintenance, servicing and repair of oil and gas wells.

OCL represents several hundred independent oil sector technicians and engineers. They have contracts to supply personnel to over 40 different oilfield operators and service firms -- including many of the world's leading oil companies.

All contractors supplied by the company are assessed by experienced in-house oil industry engineers. As a result only fully approved and qualified personnel are selected and supplied for specific oilfield engineering vacancies.

The company was started by managing director Mark Cooper, himself a former oil industry engineer, in 2003.

He said, "We send our technical specialists to work in just about every oil and gas province worldwide and over the years we have built-up an excellent reputation in the industry for providing highly qualified personnel."

"Such is the prestige of the Queen's Award that we expect it to have a significant positive impact for our business in many areas and particularly in the former Commonwealth countries of the Middle East and Africa where we export more than 60% of our services."

Oil Consultants typically has representatives working in 30 to 40 countries. New opportunities have been developed in China, Brazil, Libya and Qatar and the company has office subsidiaries in China and Trinidad.

Key to the company's success and its ability to respond to emergency labor requirements is a sophisticated data management system linked to its website. This has been developed by OCL to respond to customers varied requirements and tracks and maintains engineers' qualifications, references, competency records, client requirements, timesheets and other data.

Data supplied by clients and consultants also enables the company to produce a comprehensive international day rate survey of most oil industry engineering disciplines to monitor changes in salary and consulting rates.

Mark Cooper said, "Our strong growth reflects the success we have had in providing an outstanding level of service to our clients, mainly due to the hard work and professional conduct of our employees and subcontractors. I am delighted that their efforts have been recognized with this prestigious award."

The Queen's Awards for Enterprise are awarded annually to those UK companies demonstrating outstanding achievement in terms of substantial growth in overseas earnings and commercial success.
