Maersk Contractors Takes Delivery of LIDER

Maersk Contractors has taken delivery of a highly efficient deepwater semisubmersible drilling rig in Azerbaijan - the first drilling rig in the Caspian Sea for Maersk Contractors. The rig was named "LIDER" at a ceremony in Baku on July 24, 2003.

The construction of "LIDER" rig was undertaken by Keppel FELS, Singapore and Caspian Shipyard Company, Baku, and was completed with an outstanding safety record.

The "LIDER" is the largest and most powerful drilling rig in the Caspian Sea capable of drilling in water depths from 75 to 1,000 meters, which enables the rig to operate in approximately 40% of the Caspian Sea.

The dimensions of the deck are 63.5 meters in length, 64.5 meters in width, and 35 meters from the pontoons to the top of the deck. The variable deck load capacity is 4,000 tons and the rig has accommodation facilities for up to 130 people.

Great emphasis on safety and protection of the environment has been put into the design of the "LIDER". The equipment has thus been automated to the most possible extent, and the rig is equipped with state-of-the-art environmental control systems.

The first assignment for the "LIDER" is a three-year drilling contract with possible extension, with Exxon Azerbaijan Operating Company LLC and Chevron Overseas Petroleum Azerbaijan Limited, partnered with SOCAR Oil Affiliate, ConocoPhillips (U.K.) Limited and Total Exploration and Production Azerbaijan.
