CNOOC & Sinopec to Begin Pinghu Phase 2 Operations in Oct.

Sinopec and CNOOC plan to start operations for the second phase of the Pinghu natural gas field offshore China in mid-October, raising daily gas throughput by 29%, a Sinopec official said Friday.

"We have completed the offshore engineering work, and are now adding final touches to onshore facilities," he said. Field operators plan to raise daily throughput to 1.8 million cubic meters/day from the current 1.4 million cubic meters/day.

Pinghu's production capacity will be raised to 2 million tons cubic meters a day after the new facilities start operation, up from the current 1.6 million cubic meters/day, he said. "Our production is based on the demand for gas in Shanghai," he said.

The expansion, which involves drilling eight production wells and building one offshore gas production platform as well as the onshore offsite facilities, cost about 1.7 billion yuan.

Production at Pinghu started in 1999 at an initial rate of 200,000 cubic meters a day.
