New Gulf Regional Supervisor Takes Reins at MMS



Minerals Management Service (MMS) Gulf of Mexico Regional Director Lars Herbst has selected David W. Cooke, Ph.D., as the new Regional Supervisor for Resource Evaluation in the Gulf Region Office.

"Dr. Cooke brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to his new position," said Regional Director Herbst in making the announcement. "His many years of work in this area will ensure the continued success and vital contributions that Resource Evaluation makes to the Gulf Region."

As Regional Supervisor for Resource Evaluation, Dr. Cooke's responsibilities will include overseeing economic evaluations for lease sales and reserve and resource assessments in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS.) He will manage a staff of 135 geologists, petroleum engineers, geophysicists, and support staff who are responsible for data acquisition and management, economic analysis, resource studies, and environmentally sound oil and gas operations throughout the Gulf OCS Region.

Dr. Cooke began his career at MMS in July 1978 with its predecessor, the United States Geological Survey, and has held numerous geologist and supervisory positions during his MMS tenure, most recently as the Gulf of Mexico Region's Deputy Regional Supervisor for Resource Evaluation. Dr. Cooke holds a B.A. degree in Geology from Queens College, CUNY; a Masters in Philosophy, and a Ph.D. in Marine Geology from Columbia University and the Lamont Observatory.
