Indian Government Creates Special Dept for Helicopter Safety

Even as the death of 22 ONGC employees in a helicopter crash near Mumbai has revived apprehensions about the safety of such operations, the Indian Government has decided to tighten safety regulations for helicopters and small aircraft.

A separate department is being created within the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). A number of recommendations of Sunil Arora committee, set up to prescribe improved safety standards for these categories, are being implemented, civil aviation minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

The DGCA has also appointed one flight inspector to look exclusively at helicopter operations. Since helicopter aviation is all set to become an essential instrument of connectivity in several regions, safety standards for helicopter operations would be tightened further.
