Wood Group Donates Surface Wellhead Equipment to UT for Display
Wood Group Pressure Control ("WGPC") has donated three surface wellheads to the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin for permanent display outside the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building. The display is intended to interest students in the oil & gas industry, and will be used as a training tool when discussing wellhead technology.
The display comprises three WGPC surface wellheads with production trees -- a conventional wellhead and two speedhead systems -- along with a subsea wellhead donated by Dril-Quip. WGPC's speedhead systems are designed to accelerate installation and enhance safety; they require approximately 17 hours less to install than the conventional wellhead.
"Well-trained young people are the future of the oil and gas industry," stated Scott Bender, president of Wood Group Pressure Control. "Engineering students have a variety of industries to choose from following graduation; we want them to choose ours."
The University of Texas' Cockrell School of Engineering is ranked among the best in the U.S. Its petroleum engineering school is ranked #1 and #2 respectively for graduate and undergraduate programs by U.S. News & World Report.
The display is Wood Group's latest investment in both education and the future sustainability of the oil and gas industry. The company is sponsoring professorial chairs at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, for offshore engineering for arctic and harsh environments, and another at Kazakhstan British Technical University (KBTU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Wood Group has also introduced a five-year scholarship program for engineering students at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, and is sponsoring engineering students at the Dubai campus of Heriot Watt University in the United Arab Emirates.
