Caledus Sets Up Shop in Dubai, Spearheads New SlimWell Technology

Caledus has announced its entry into the Middle East market with the establishment of an office and manufacturing base in Dubai.

The creation of the Dubai operation is part of the Company’s long-term strategic international growth. Caledus, which is enjoying significant global expansion from its existing bases in Aberdeen, Perth Australia, Calgary and Houston, covering the Americas, Asia Pacific and the North Sea, has developed an operation, manufacturing, distribution, service and repair base and sales centre for the Middle East in Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai.

The Company will herald its entry into the market by exhibiting at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) which runs from November 3-6 this year.

In line with its expansion into the Middle East market and its focus on the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in particular, Caledus has agreed strategic alliances with established service companies Shoaibi Group in Saudi Arabia and Al Mazroui Trading and General Services in Abu Dhabi.

Through this alliance, Caledus will spearhead the Middle East promotion of its SlimWELL® technology and its TD SOLUTIONS™ business stream.

SlimWELL® slims down the well profile while maintaining well integrity and intervention ability. It has the potential to reduce well construction costs by up to 50 per cent, enhances safety and reduces environmental impact.

TD SOLUTIONS™ is a range of individual down hole products and services to reduce non productive time (NPT) in well construction and ensure tubulars reach total planned depth. The range is specifically focused on challenging wellbore conditions, high angle, extended reach drilling and horizontal wells where torque and drag, friction and casing wear reduction are key requirements.

Heading the Dubai office will be John Hanton who will move from his current position as Region Manager Europe Africa to Middle East Regional Manager. Caledus has also appointed Carl Hills as global SlimWELL® commercial manager. Carl, who joins Caledus from a strong operator background, will focus on the Middle East as part of his international remit.

In line with its business expansion and rapid internationalization Caledus, which already employs more than 40 staff from just four in 2004, anticipates an increase in staff in 2009. The Company has experienced double digit growth year on year for the last three years. This is expected to continue through 2009 as Caledus continues to introduce new tools to its TD SOLUTIONS™ portfolio and embarks on the enhanced global commercialisation of SlimWELL®.

Paul Howlett, CEO and co-founder of Caledus, said, "We see the Middle East as a vitally important market and are entering at a crucial time for Caledus and the industry as a whole. The vast majority of 'easy plays' in the region have gone, drilling is becoming much more complex and standard equipment which has proved successful in the past is often unsuitable to the conditions. In these circumstances, we believe our technologies can answer some of the questions posed by today’s Middle East drilling sector challlenges.

"Caledus has already established itself in many of the key strategic locations in the oil and gas industry and we see the Middle East will be a significant contributor to our portfolio. Shoaibi Group and Al Mazroui Trading and General Services have identified the enormous potential for the deployment of our technologies in the region. Their support will greatly enhance our growing reputation in the Middle East and help ensure the industry in this region benefits from the specific expertise we can bring."
