Aker Yards Delivers SCV Skandi Acergy to DOF Subsea

Aker Yards has delivered an advanced Subsea Construction Vessel, the Skandi Acergy, to DOF Subsea ASA. The vessel is specially designed and equipped for subsea operation duties with a high focus on good sea-keeping abilities and excellent station keeping performances. The vessel is environmental friendly with focus on low fuel consumption and precautions equivalent to DNV's CLEAN DESIGN requirements are incorporated in the design.

Skandi Acergy is among the world's most advanced subsea construction vessel in its class. With its 157 meters length and 27 meters breadth it is a giant. She is delivered to her proud owners, DOF Subsea ASA, and the naming ceremony will take place in Bergen, July 10th. The vessel is designed for deep water operations, with depths to more than 3 000 meters, and she will now commence a 8 years chart for Acergy (hence the name). Her first job will although be on the Norwegian shelf.

Skandi Acergy is equipped for DP-III (IMO) operations which means enhanced safety as one of the machinery compartments can be flooded or under fire without forcing the vessel out of service. She is also equipped with a large offshore crane, with 400 tons lifting capacity. The crane installations (includes all three cranes, its winch systems, wires and power packs) alone weighs more than a typical PSV of the North Sea.

It has three moonpools, the largest is the work-moonpool in the ship's centre, while two smaller ones are situated transverse, one port and one starboard, inside the ROV hangar. The enclosed ROV hangar provides shelter for the crew operating and serving the ROV's. Making it unnecessary to operate the ROV overboard, but through the moonpools, makes the working environment for the crew calmer as well as temperate.

Skandi Acergy, despite its size, is a vessel made for speed. With a maximum speed of 18 knots she is able to move fast between areas of operations or to shoreside base if needed. Equipped astern with two azimuth propellers and one controllable pitch propeller (frequency controlled) she is set for various weather and operating conditions. This new propeller set up also makes Skandi Acergy electric consumption performance an excellent one, as the different conditions provide her wide a wide array of setups meeting all the needs at any time. This again provides an environmental friendly aspect as the vessel never consumes more power and energy than actually needed. Forward she is equipped with two tunnel thrusters and two retractable azimuth thrusters making her well propelled for high performing station keeping also in rough weather conditions.

The vessel's aft azimuth propellers may be set in a fixed heading while running on the centre propeller. The centre propeller with rudder then makes her operate as any conventional one screw vessel. With the centre propeller in operation only, she makes a fair 12 knots speed.

Skandi Acergy is also constructed according to today's environmental standards with DnV clean design class as well as catalysators. Most important however, is the hull's design which is among the most effective ever built for a vessel of this kind. The much extended sea keeping model tests (tank and ocean basin tests), the result has proven 30% better performance in hull resistance compared to today's average.

The aft deck has the size of 2.100 m2, which is close to half a soccer field. The deck space provides for sure enough space for almost any cargo or service/repairs to be performed. Below deck, she is fitted with a carousel able to carry up to 3 000 T of cable or pipes.

The vessel has accommodation capacity for 140 persons. She is designed for comfort and well being for the crew. On board you find cinema, library, gymnasium, game rooms as well as several rest- and dayrooms. In proof of the vessels size we may mention the wheelhouse, with its approximately 300 m2 is a spacious one, as the rest of the vessel.

The Aker OSCV 06 L is designed by Aker Yards Project in Ålesund, the hull is built at Aker Yards in Romania, and Aker Yards Søviknes was responsible for the outfitting and completion of the Skandi Acergy.

Totally Aker Yards has eight vessels of the same successful design in the order book. This includes also versions arranged as Well Intervention vessels and one Diving Support Vessel. The different vessels will be built at Aker Yards in Norway and Brazil.
