EnCana Abandons Beaufort Sea Well

EnCana has plugged and abandoned its exploratory well at the McCovey prospect in the Beaufort Sea earlier this month. The McCovey prospect is located 12 miles north of Prudhoe Bay in the Beaufort Sea. It was the only Alaska oil prospect in the federally managed outercontinental shelf that was under active exploration.

The company has six months to submit a plan for extending operations. If an extension is not obtained then operations will cease and the leases may revert to the federal government. EnCana has said that the results of the well are confidential and is not disclosing what, if any, future plans are being made for the McCovey prospect.

EnCana's partners at McCovey are ConocoPhillips and ChevronTexaco.
