Kerr-McGee has announced the discovery of oil in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico on it's Gunnison prospect in Garden Banks Block 668. The well encountered 275 feet of net hydrocarbon pay in three main zones and was drilled to a depth of 17,000 feet in approximately 3,150 feet of water. The well was drilled by Noble Drilling's EVA 4000 semisubmersible, Noble Amos Runner which is capable of drilling in water depths of up to 6,000 feet. The rig is currently drilling a down dip appraisal sidetrack to explore the aerial extent of the reservoir. Additional appraisal sidetracks are being considered to further delineate the Gunnison discovery. The Gunnison sub-basin includes Garden Banks blocks 667, 668 and 669, all operated by Kerr-McGee with 50 percent interest. Partners in the blocks are Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. with a 30 percent interest, and Cal Dive International, Inc., with 20 percent interest.
