Fairmont Says Fjell Conversion Set to Begin
Fairmount Heavy Transport NV (FHT) says that Malta Shipyards Ltd has dry-docked the semi-submersible barge Fjell in the Marsa dry-docking facility.
The conversion of the Fjell into a self-propelled semi-submersible heavy transport vessel is underway. Philip Adkins, CEO of FHT stated the following:
"FHT and Malta Shipyards have learned many lessons together after our experience converting the Fjord. With the Fjord only a few weeks away from its final departure, we felt it was now the appropriate time to bring Fjell into the dry-dock and start the clock for the Fjell conversion. We expect the Fjell to be finished by April 2008. FHT has made a number of changes with respect to the organization and management of the Fjell Conversion Project. The two principal subcontractors, namely Babcock Design & Technology Ltd and Imtech Marine and Offshore BV have become direct subcontractors of FHT. In our view this will give FHT a higher degree of control and accountability of subcontractor performance as well as shortening lines of communication. In the last few weeks FHT has invested a significant amount of time in pre-planning with the yard. A lack of adequate planning on the Fjord plagued progress from the beginning. A significant amount of steelwork fabrication has already been completed by the yard. Long lead items such as High Voltage cable and custom switchboards have already been ordered. We have made significant improvement in the organization of critical procurement. We are confident that many of the mistakes made throughout the Fjord experience will not be repeated and the April delivery date is realistic and achievable."
