National Drilling Company reports that their jackup, Al Mariyah, collapsed while the rig cantilever was skidding over wellhead tower 94. The rig floor then tilted and pivoted onto the wellhead tower, causing severe damage to the helideck and topside structure. The derrick fell to the ocean floor and the rig eventually settled on the water's surface. There were 68 people on board the rig at the time of the accident and 56 people were rescued safely. The eight injured were taken to Mafraq Hospital and four were confirmed dead. It is reported that no environmental damage has been caused by the accident. The Al Mariyah is a Baker Marine independent leg jackup rated for water depths up to 150 feet. The rig was originally built for Loffland Brothers in 1982.
