Aker Kvaerner Tests Fairleads for Thunder Horse Project
The Aker Kvaerner company Maritime Pusnes has recently carried out a test on the last one of a total of 16 roller-type fairleads for the Thunder Horse platform. The fairleads are part of the on-vessel mooring equipment.
The semi-submersible production platform will be located in Mississippi Canyon Block 778 in approximately 6,000 feet of water. The Thunder Horse field is located in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 125 miles southeast of New Orleans.
The fairleads – developed and manufactured by Maritime Pusnes – are to be used during the installation of the 16-line mooring system and station keeping of the platform. The equipment is very advanced and represents a new generation of fairleads. The working life of the fairleads is estimated to 30 years, and each unit is designed for ROV. Compared with the fairleads delivered in the 1980s there are also considerable cost reductions related to use of material and production.
