BJ Completes Pre-commissioning Services for Perseus-over-Goodwyn Project

BJ Process and Pipeline Services has successfully completed a range of pipeline engineering, testing and pre-commissioning services for Allseas Construction Contractors SA on behalf of pipeline owner Woodside Energy Ltd and its Perseus-over-Goodwyn Project, a natural gas pipeline system. The pipeline is located in water depths of 130 meters, approximately 20km northeast of the Goodwyn Alpha platform and 7.8km northwest of the North Rankin Platform in the North West Shelf offshore Dampier, Western Australia.

The Perseus-over-Goodwyn Project involves constructing a subsea pipeline system to carry natural gas from the Perseus Field offshore Western Australia to the onshore Karratha Gas Plant. It will bring the Perseus Field into production to fully utilize the Goodwyn platform's production capacity as it becomes available. The pipeline system will establish a subsea infrastructure system tied back to the Goodwyn platform to access the majority of remaining Perseus reserves. The new pipeline system is scheduled to begin operating in October 2007.

BJ PPS was retained by Allseas to provide flooding, gauging, hydrostatic testing and pre-commissioning services for the 16-inch x 24.1km subsea line and two 10-inch PoG pipelines measuring 1.4km and 1.8km, respectively.

The contract was awarded in September 2006 and BJ PPS mobilized equipment and personnel from its base in Perth in October. Throughout the following five months, all necessary services were carried out, with all three infield flowlines flooded, gauged and tested with Allseas' dynamically positioned supply vessel, the Highland Rover.

BJ PPS used a range of its specialist pipeline testing and commissioning equipment. Two new Woma pressurizing pumps were used offshore for the first time by BJ PPS. The units were custom-designed and built in-house by BJ PPS for Allseas in Australia on compact skids that made them easy to transport offshore.

A dedicated team of eight BJ PPS engineers and technicians was responsible for all operational aspects of the Goodwyn-over-Perseus contract, as well as the preparation of operational procedures, planning, health, safety and environmental requirements, quality assurance and administration. "The workscope was carried out safely and professionally in just over 4,000 man-hours without any major incident, which demonstrates how all parties put safety first," said Lindsay Link, general manager of BJ PPS. "The ultimate success of the job is a testimony to the all of the BJPPS staff involved, including workshop, administrative, sales, management and field personnel who contributed to the project," he added.

BJ PPS has worked in a similar capacity for Allseas on numerous projects throughout the world, including the North Sea, Egypt, Australia and the Gulf of Mexico. In 2002, BJ PPS achieved success for Allseas in Australia when it successfully carried out flooding, gauging, hydrotesting and dewatering services on the 14-inch Victoria – Tasmania natural gas pipeline in 2002.
