Chinguitti C-6-1 Thon Well Disappointing

The Chinguitti C-6-1 Thon exploration well, offshore Mauritania is to be plugged and abandoned at a total depth of 3,294 meters after encountering only minor hydrocarbon shows.

Preliminary wireline log interpretation indications are that no significant hydrocarbons have been encountered in the well. Work is continuing on the interpretation of the wireline data, however a decision has been reached to plug and abandon the well at the current depth of 3,294 meters.

The Thon Prospect is located in Area C (Block 6) 125 kilometers northwest of Nouakchott and 100 kilometers north of the Chinguetti discovery. Water depth at the location is 659 meters. The primary target at the Thon Prospect comprised a sand channel system interpreted from 3D seismic.

Hardman Managing Director Ted Ellyard said Thon's drilling completes the 2002 Mauritanian drilling campaign. "It is unfortunate the hydrocarbon shows and sand quality in the primary target at the Thon prospect were not better developed," Ellyard said. But he said that overall the drilling program has been an outstanding success, citing the Chinguetti appraisal wells, the Banda discovery and costs that were below budget. "These results will underpin an expanded appraisal and exploration program next year," Ellyard said.

Woodside is the operator with a 37.58% interest; Hardman has a 22.42% interest; Petronas Carigali has a 35% interest and Roc Oil holds the remaining 5% interest.
