Bosch Rexroth Introduces Next Gen of Rotating Active Heave Compensators

Bosch Rexroth introduces the new generation of rotating Active Heave Compensators (AHC). This system increases the workable hours at sea and allows for safe and accurate implementation of the work under heavy weather conditions at increasingly deeper depths.

Bosch Rexroth offers a complete program of high dynamic AHC systems, fully equipped for the future demands of the maritime industry, to engineering companies, OEM's, construction companies and end-users. For over 50 years, Bosch Rexroth has been active in the development, production and maintenance of drive and control solutions for the offshore oil and gas industry, the dredge industry and the maritime sector.

The fast, responsive AHC systems, built from proven drive technology and advanced control systems, make sure unexpected and damaging reactions of the load do not occur. The system is based on secondary technology for the control-led handling of loads between 22 and 110 tons. By compensating over 90% of the ship movements it is possible to realize an unparalleled precision at extreme depths.

The secondary drive technology, combined with energy retrieval, storage and recycling, results in very compact systems with an enormous reduction on the installed power. The four quadrant drive principle offers an extremely versatile and flexible operation. The integration of winch drive and an active heave compensator in one system makes additional deck equipment redundant, through which valuable and useful deck space is preserved, both with retrofits as well as new builds.

The drive system consists of specially developed adjustable axial piston motors, the aggregate, the batteries to store energy, the Motion Reference Unit and the necessary interfaces. The specially designed controls with dedicated software enable the winch operator to go through the different phases of the procedure fully controlled. The following operation modes can be selected:

  • Active compensation mode
  • Constant tension mode
  • Empty hook mode
  • Shock absorber mode
  • Standby mode
  • Off mode

The complete system is equipped with the required redundancy and safety measures. In the operational phase the customer is always assured of adequate service through Bosch Rexroth's worldwide network, wherever the installation is. With the local knowledge centers, specialized know-how, experience and material is available for field service, training, retrofits, maintenance and spare parts.

Bosch Rexroth AG, part of the Bosch Group, achieved sales of approximately $6.2 billion (4.9 billion Euro) in 2006 with over 29,800 employees. Under the brand name of Rexroth the company offers all drive and control technologies, from mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics to electronics and associated service. Over 500,000 customers worldwide utilize Rexroth's unique technological know-how to implement their innovative and future-oriented systems and machine concepts. The global player, represented in over 80 countries, is an extensive supplier of components and systems for industrial and factory automation and mobile applications.
